My Seminar
Taken moments before my seminar last Saturday. They looked interested during the seminar but I can't tell if they are faking it.

Mini Elisa
First time ko gumamit ng Immunocomb Kit for chicken. Nakakabano!
I'm familiar with the Immunocomb Kit for dogs but the method of getting blood sample is different. In dogs, sagana ang dugo. In DOC's (day old chicks) a lancet is used to puncture its wing vein and instead of using a hematocrit tube to draw blood, a paper disk is used to collect whole blood.
Processing is relatively fast and it's also cheaper than conventional methods. Tumagal lang dun well kung saan kelangang hintaying mag-disintegrate ang blood from the paper discs. One hour yun. The rest was just 10-2-10-2-2-10-2! Wala pang forty minutes.

Placing paper discs on the wells.

Processing....

Paper discs. Used in getting whole blood sample directly from the birds.

The funny controls. One is the positive control and the other is the negative control. Does a negative control contain anything? Should it be supplied as part of the package? Or a drop of plain water will do?

The comb after it was developed. It's now ready for reading and interpretation. There are three tests per tooth (one tooth one sample): IBD, ND and IB.

Nothing
On my mind are a lot of things but I couldn't put them into words. Right now, I'm making my presentation for my seminar this coming Saturday. I wish that I could fill in the 3 hours allotted to me.
On another topic, the news about Gloria's conversation with Garci depresses me and makes me think that whatever we (young people) plan to do, if it's within the Philippines, it would amount to nothing. Is it the destiny of our Philippines to be 3rd world forever?

Panunumpa
Our cooperative has a very long and detailed Panunumpa ng Kasapian which I find so outlandish. I don't know who wrote this or whether it's being used by other cooperatives in the Philippines. Here it goes:
I pledge to do my part as good member-patron and assume the responsibility in the cooperative association that has been voluntarily established to serve my community.
I will
Be loyal, and consider myself a part of and not apart from my cooperative association.
Recognize the financial needs if the association and as a good member-patron willingly furnish my share of the required capital.
Support the cooperative association with my patronage, to the fullest extent possible, and encourage others to do likewise.
Help establish and vote for policies for the association which will be fair for all.
Vote for and urge the election of directors, including older, experienced and younger members, who are capable, progressive and willing to give close attention to the affairs of the cooperative.
Carefully read and study the articles of incorporation and by-laws and sincerely try to comply with the provisions in these guidelines and with policies adopted by the board of directors.
Seek full information about the association and study the problems so that I can ask for advice and vote intelligently, and adopt up-to-date and effective methods and procedures.
Do independent and careful thinking and express my honest opinion, but be open-minded and be a team worker.
Curb emotions and apply reason and common sense to all association affairs.
Remember that membership in the association carries with it the obligation to abide by the decision of the majority even when I am in the minority.
Pay cash, if possible, for all goods and services obtained from the association and in any event pay my accounts promptly in accordance with the established credit policy.
Be prompt and attentive at all association meetings and prevent loss of time.
Participate actively in meetings of the association, but take only a reasonable and proportionate share of the time for discussion so that the other members may also have an opportunity to express their views.
I will not
Consider my cooperative as just another place to buy and sell.
Expect privileges from the association that are not available to the other members.
Insist that my ideas shall always prevail.
Approve the employment of close relatives of directors and executives in the association.
Unfairly criticize the directors, the management and other employees or members of the association.
Carry grudges against members, patrons, directors, the management or employees.

Dr Madec's 20 Point Plan against PMWS
Farrowing
1. All-in/all-out and empty all pits and clean and disinfect between batches.
2. Wash sows and treat for parasites before farrowing.
3. Limit cross-fostering to that which is necessary within 24 hours of farrowing.
Post weaning
4. Small pens (<13) and solid partitions.
5. Empty pit and clean and disinfect, sticking to all-in/all-out.
6. Lower stocking density (3 pigs per square meter or 0.33 square meters per pig).
7. Increased feeder space per pig +7cm/piglet.
8. Improved air quality.
9. Improved temperature control.
10. No mixing of batches.
Grower/Finisher
11. Small pens, solid partitions
12. Empty pit, clean and disinfect and maintain strict all-in/all-out policy.
13. No mixing of pigs from the post-weaning pens.
14. No re-mixing between finishing pens.
15. Lower stocking density: + 0.75 square meter per pig.
16. Improved air quality and temperature.
In addition…
17. Appropriate vaccination program.
18. Sensible flow within buildings (air and animals)
19. Strict hygiene (tail and teeth clipping, injections and others)
20. Early removal of sick pigs to a hospital room, or euthanasia.

Blockmate
Joseph dela Cruz. Taken outside the lecture hall. Dim ang lighting kaya ganyan. Di pala, dark lang ang subject. He he.
Resistensya
Mas magandang maging pediatrician o geriatrician kasi mas maraming kliyente!

Formalin
Formalin in vapor form is a good disinfectant. As a matter of fact, it's being used in isolation rooms of some human hospitals that I've been to.
Here are the materials needed to come up with formalin gas:
-16 liters formalin
-8 kg potassium permanganate
-8 liters water
For poultry houses, it's used as final disinfectant. Final means that the house has already been cleaned of debris and fecal materials and has been disinfected once using a quaternary ammonium compound disinfectant or any other commercial disinfectant.
To generate vapor, place the pottassium permanganate powder on a can. Add the formalin and water and then run!
The quantities enumerated above can be used to fumigate a building for 3,000 heads broiler.

PMWS
PMWS is a newly emerged disease of pigs.
Today I attended a seminar about PMWS and Mycotoxins in Makati. I was so surprised to see Dr. Joseph there. He's now involved with Nuevo Milenio Inc. the local distributor of Impextraco. These companies are the sponsors together with DLSU-Araneta.
As usual Dr. Jonelle was there with her boss. In every event that they attend they make it a point to ask the most number of questions be it essential or not.
Dr. Baby from Limcoma was also there.

A controlled personality with a vast range of skills and behavior, you are often intrigued by the people and places surrounding you.
In the strictest sense, I did not win -- I busted him up.
Cutest cola
Have you seen this cola?

1st Day Funk
Sana kung student pa ko. E hindi na e. Kaya pumunta kami ngayon sa Calatagan to visit one of our projects there.
Maganda yung site, parang next to heaven. Malapit sa lighthouse yung libingan which is opposite nung port.
