Ostrich Close Up

Ostriches Doing The Deed

Did you know that among animals laying eggs, ostriches have the lowest body weight-egg ratio?

Burmese Python

Wikipedia says:

The Burmese python is frequently captive-bred for colour, pattern, and more recently size. Its albino form is especially popular and is the most widely available morph. They are white with patterns in butterscotch yellow and burnt orange.

Killer Whale Killed Its Trainer

This was in Sea World, in Florida during a performance, with guests watching.

What made a killer whale turn on its trainer at Seaworld?

This is one reason why I don't go to Manila Ocean Park and in Ocean Adventure in Subic. I feel that these animals are abused in a way because they're kept for profit. Also, they're confined in such a small place that I think is very unnatural for them. Imagine swimming with your waste? It's so Manny Villar.

Pig's Milk

An interesting blog:
Why do we drink cow's milk and not pig's milk...? We are, after all, very similar to pigs (both being omnivores and having similar internal anatomy and physiology)
cont.

And patent for a pig?

Corn

  • After last year's Rice Crisis now comes the Corn Crisis. Without adequate supply (some speculates that this is artificial), the price of corn is now more than 20 pesos from 13-14 pesos.
  • With backyard production parameters (FCR~3.5, ADG~0.6) the cost of production per kg of live pig is ~98 pesos at current price of corn.
  • Farm gate price of hogs is 105 pesos, and increasing.

Some Important Updates: PRRS, EBOLA, Death in Biogas, Hong Kong Bird FLu

Are we prepared?

The government is doing its best. I just came from a Contingency Planning Workshop for Bird Flu. In the workshop, all possible scenarios were planned including us having human to human transmission. If (wag naman sana) an infection in birds is detected, there were provisions for stamping out.

Stamping out is actually easier said than done due to the lack of provisions of funds for payment of farmer's stocks. Imagine the 3 km + 7 km radius that would be stamped out.
