Among the services that are offered are: deworming and vaccination (against rabies; and canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) of dogs and cats, routine wellness check ups, dog and cat medicine and surgery (including spay and neutering), external parasite control, grooming, boarding and confinement/hospitalization. House calls will also be done, for wellness only, within Puerto Princesa City.

In my travels around South East Asia I usually try to find and visit a veterinary practice. On my way to the bank ATM on the second day I came across without looking for it the Rebadulla Animal Hospital and off course I just had to go inside. It was difficult to see how the premises could qualify in any way to be called “hospital.” Dr Ellen Aboo (a Filipino qualified vet) was sitting in reception, which was also the consulting room, and she made me feel very welcome and very humble. I will never again grumble about poor facilities or lack of equipment. She said she was very happy in her job despite having no Xray machine, no gaseous anaesthetic and a microscope that was so inadequate she seldom used it.
The main problems in the island dogs according to Ellen were Rabies, Ehrlichia, Distemper and Parvo (not necessarily in that order) with which she coped with great good humour. She preferred to work in Boracay despite the poor facilities than in any of the other five clinics spread throughout the Philippines including Manila that were owned by her veterinarian boss.
Rabies vaccination (Rabisin) is done every year for 300 Pesos (£3) with the full range of vaccination including rabies is 800 pesos (£8). She spays a bitch using an ACP and atropine as a premedication and then Zoletil, which is a combination of ketamine and diazepam derivatives given intramuscularly and charges between 3,000 pesos and 5,500 pesos depending on size. She is not only a small animal vet but attends the few farm animals on the island and was just leaving the premises to AI sows with semen collected from one of two boars at an AI centre. She gasped when I told her I had previously looked after an AI centre in the UK with more than 60 boars at stud.

DURING a visit to Bangkok last November, I read about a new book written by King Bhumibol Adulyadej with the self-explanatory title: "Biography of a Pet Dog." Off I went to the bookstores, but they had sold out all of 100,000 copies.
Last month on another visit to Bangkok, I finally got a copy of the book and was amazed to find out it had been reprinted nine times between November 2002 and January 2003, for a total print run of 650,000 copies.
I'm sure the king's popularity contributed to the book's sale. But possibly another reason for the brisk sales was the Thais' general fondness for dogs. With rising income and a growing middle class, there's status attached as well to having dogs, preferably purebred ones.
And that's what makes the king's book so amazing. The book focuses on Tongdaeng, clearly the favorite among the king's many dogs. The book has numerous photographs of a light brown dog -- thus the name Tongdaeng, which means "copper" in Thai -- with features that show she's a mixture of many different breeds.

1. Canine Parvo Virus (CPV) - characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence.
2. Canine Distemper Virus (CD) - there are four forms of this disease. Respiratory, Digestive, Skin, Nervous type. Symptoms are similar to CPV.
3. Canine Corona Virus (CCV) – signs are similiar but not as fatal as CPV.
4. Canine Infectious Hepatitis (ICH) – is a viral infection that affects the Liver and gastro intestinal system. Can be characterized by yellowing of mucus membranes(jaundice).
5. Parainfluenza (Kennel Cough, infectious Tracheo Bronchitis) – is a complex respiratory disease.
6. Canine Leptospirosis (CL) – a bacterial infection that can also infect humans. Organs affected are Liver, Kidney and brain. Can also be seen with jaundice(yellowing) of mucus membranes.
7. Rabies – A very fatal viral disease transmitted by a bite of infected animal (dogs,cats and even rodents). Not curable when symptoms appear. Consult your vet or a medical Doctor right away when you or anybody is bitten by a dog or cat suspected to have rabies.
