Housefly

The housefly, Musca domestica, is one of the insects I hate most, although I hate all of them. I hate them because I hate Veterinary Parasitology 1, which is a required subject for all second year proper veterinary students in UPLB. Along with the dreaded "P" subjects (Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology) this is the most notorious but because no vet student wants to fail, it is also the most memorized and reviewed subject.

In the board exams, the questions in Parasitology are the hardest. Imagine being asked about parasites of exotic animals!

The laboratory part of Parasitology is more of a drawing class. We were required to draw the microscopic view of the mouthparts of the mosquitoes, the ends of the maggots, and the venation of the wings of different insects including the housefly.

Although houseflies are called houseflies, they are not only abundant inside dirty houses but they're also present in almost every inhabited place on earth. They are abundant in farms, markets, sidewalks, and even in offices!

They can carry more than one hundred types of diseases and they can quickly reproduce and they can fly. Every time a broiler house cleans up after harvest in a nearby barangay, our piggery is overflowing with them.

In the farm, we use a mixture of molasses, spoiled feeds and Agita to reduce their population.
